Original petition: http://florida-family.org/take_action_form.php?message=64
Florida Family Association (an organization whose only job seems to be to get in a big huff anytime they're reminded that gay people exist) is running a petition to Bioware telling how disappointed they are that gay people will be included in the MMO Star Wars: the Old Republic (SWTOR). While this isn't particularly suprising, since this is pretty much all the FFA does, the actual petition is laughable in its language.
American families grew up with the Star Wars film series that was family fare. The films contained no profanity, no nudity and no sexual situations. Right, except for the girl making out with her brother to piss off the guy to whom she's actually attracted. Also, she shows up later in a gold metal bikini that to this day remains the height of nerd-based objectification.
Also, while yes, many family enjoy the Star Wars series, its over 30 years old now. It predates my life for god's sake. Have you seen any Star Wars fans on youtube videos? The most ardent fans are well past their 20s.
It makes no sense that BioWare and Electronic Arts would shatter that family quality in Star Wars video games just to pacify 35 LGBT polling participants and appease extremists. I'm not sure where they got that number, but ~10-20% of Americans are gay (depending on which studies you read), and just over 50% are either for gay marriage or pretty meh about it. That doesn't exactly strike me as terribly radical. Maybe a bit left of center. And "appease extremists" seems to be the opposite of what they're doing, hence why your organization is pissed off. Also "family quality" does not equal "only the 'traditional' family that I subscribe to."
stop this from impacting our children. Everything we encounter impacts us in some way, protesting that is moronic. The game is rated Teen, which indicates that some sexual themes can occur, as teens are expected to be mature enough to understand that romantic relationships happen. If you're really worried about your child "being impacted," stop paying the subscription costs (because I'm willing to bet majority of teens aren't paying the monthly subscription out of their own pockets), or don't buy the game in the first place.
I have to reiterate my theme on these issues: parent your own damn kids, stop trying to make everyone else do it for you.
